Bacterial Virulence Factor Analysis Service

Profiling of virulence factors and pathogenicity islands.

Virulence analysis looks for genes that help bacteria cause disease, such as toxins, adhesins, secretion systems and iron-uptake systems. It also predicts the overall potential of the strain to be pathogenic in humans.

For beneficial strains the question is the reverse: showing that a probiotic or industrial strain lacks harmful virulence genes is a key part of a safety dossier.

What you receive

  • Table of virulence-associated genes with identity and coverage
  • Grouping by function: toxins, adhesion, invasion, secretion, iron acquisition
  • Pathogenicity prediction with PathogenFinder2
  • Genomic islands and clusters where several virulence genes sit together
  • Interpretation in the context of the species and your application

How we do it

  1. 1

    Gene screening

Predicted proteins are compared with curated databases of known virulence factors.

  2. 2

    Pathogenicity prediction

PathogenFinder2 estimates the strain's potential to be a human pathogen.

  3. 3

    Context

We check whether virulence genes cluster in islands or sit near mobile elements.

  4. 4

    Interpretation

Results are weighed against what is normal for the species.

When you need it

  • Safety assessment of probiotic, food and industrial strains
  • Comparing virulence gene content between isolates
  • Background for pathogenesis research

Questions

My probiotic has a hit to a 'virulence' gene. Is it unsafe?

Not necessarily. Many genes in virulence databases, such as adhesins, are also found in harmless strains. The report explains each hit in context.
