Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Gene Analysis from WGS

Detection of antimicrobial resistance genes and determinants.

AMR analysis finds genes and mutations in your genome that are known to cause antimicrobial resistance. It is central to surveillance studies and to the safety assessment of probiotic and food strains.

Finding a gene is only half the answer. We also report how closely it matches the reference and whether it sits near plasmid or mobile element sequences, because a transferable resistance gene carries a much higher risk than an intrinsic one.

What you receive

  • Table of resistance genes with percent identity, coverage and contig location
  • Predicted antibiotic classes affected
  • Known chromosomal point mutations, where the species is supported
  • Flags for genes on plasmid-associated contigs or next to mobile elements
  • Interpretation of intrinsic versus acquired resistance

How we do it

  1. 1

    Gene screening

ResFinder screens the assembly against a curated database of acquired resistance genes.

  2. 2

    Mutation screening

Known resistance mutations are checked in supported species.

  3. 3

    Context

Each hit is checked against plasmid and mobile element results from the same genome.

  4. 4

    Interpretation

We explain which results matter for your study and their limits.

When you need it

  • AMR surveillance of clinical, food or environmental isolates (research use)
  • Probiotic and starter culture safety assessment
  • Comparing resistance profiles across a set of strains

Questions

Does a resistance gene mean the strain is resistant?

Not always. Genes can be silent or expressed at low levels, so genotype predicts phenotype well for many but not all drug–species pairs. Susceptibility testing confirms it.

Can the results be used for patient treatment?

No. Our reports are for research use only and are not intended for clinical diagnosis or treatment decisions.
