CAZyme Annotation Service with dbCAN

Carbohydrate-active enzyme profiling with dbCAN2.

Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) build and break down sugars and polysaccharides. A strain's CAZyme profile predicts which carbohydrates it can use, which matters for probiotics, gut bacteria and industrial enzyme producers.

We annotate CAZymes with dbCAN2, keeping only enzymes supported by more than one search method, and identify CAZyme gene clusters that may act on specific substrates.

What you receive

  • CAZyme families found, with counts by class (GH, GT, PL, CE, AA, CBM)
  • Per-gene table with family assignments
  • CAZyme gene clusters and possible substrates
  • Interpretation for your application, such as prebiotic use or biomass breakdown

How we do it

  1. 1

    Annotation

dbCAN2 searches each protein with three methods.

  2. 2

    Consensus

Enzymes found by at least two methods are kept, improving accuracy.

  3. 3

    Cluster detection

Groups of CAZyme genes are identified as possible utilisation loci.

  4. 4

    Interpretation

We relate the profile to the carbohydrates relevant to your work.

When you need it

  • Matching probiotics with prebiotic fibres
  • Understanding sugar fermentation in starter cultures
  • Screening strains for industrial enzyme potential

Questions

Can CAZymes prove a strain uses a sugar?

They predict it. Growth tests on defined carbohydrates confirm whether the strain actually uses it.
