Secondary Metabolite and BGC Analysis with antiSMASH
Biosynthetic gene cluster discovery with antiSMASH.
Many bacteria produce secondary metabolites, such as antibiotics, bacteriocins, siderophores and pigments. The genes for each compound usually sit together in a biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC).
antiSMASH finds these clusters, predicts their type and compares them with clusters of known compounds, pointing you to the natural products your strain may make.
What you receive
- List of BGCs with type (NRPS, PKS, RiPP, terpene and others), location and size
- Similarity to known clusters and the compounds they produce
- Cluster diagrams ready for figures
- Interpretation of clusters most relevant to your aims, such as antimicrobial or probiotic activity
How we do it
- 1
Cluster detection
antiSMASH scans the genome for biosynthetic gene clusters.
- 2
Comparison
Each cluster is compared with clusters of characterised compounds.
- 3
Prioritisation
We highlight novel or highly relevant clusters.
When you need it
- Natural product and antibiotic discovery
- Bacteriocin screening in probiotic and food strains
- Biocontrol strain characterisation in agricultural research
Questions
Does a cluster mean the compound is produced?
No. A cluster shows the genetic potential. Many clusters are silent under lab conditions, so chemical analysis is needed to confirm production.
Does assembly quality matter?
Yes. Large clusters such as PKS and NRPS are often split across contigs in fragmented assemblies, so better assemblies give more complete results.
