Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) Analysis Service

Average Nucleotide Identity for precise species delineation.

Average nucleotide identity (ANI) measures how similar two genomes are across all the sequence they share. Values of about 95–96% and above mean two strains belong to the same species, making ANI the standard genome-based test for species boundaries.

As a standalone service, ANI is useful for comparing a set of your own isolates with each other and with reference genomes, not only for naming a single strain.

What you receive

  • Pairwise ANI matrix for your genomes and selected references
  • Heatmap and clustering of strains by ANI
  • Aligned fraction for each comparison, so low-overlap results aren't over-interpreted
  • Interpretation against species and subspecies thresholds

How we do it

  1. 1

    Reference selection

We choose type strains and close relatives relevant to your genomes.

  2. 2

    Pairwise ANI

FastANI compares every pair of genomes.

  3. 3

    Visualisation

Results are shown as a heatmap and a clustering tree.

  4. 4

    Interpretation

We explain which strains are the same species and where the boundaries fall.

When you need it

  • Grouping a collection of isolates by species
  • Supporting a species description or reclassification
  • Answering a reviewer's request for genome-based taxonomy

Questions

What ANI value means 'same species'?

The widely used boundary is about 95–96%. Values close to the threshold need careful interpretation, which the report covers. Read more in our ANI guide.

Can I compare many genomes?

Yes. Pricing depends on the number of genomes; contact us with your numbers for a quote.
